Probing the delocalized core-hole via inner-shell excitation in N<sub>2</sub>

Abstract The dispute about whether the 1 s core-hole is localized on one atom or delocalized over both in a homonuclear diatomic molecule has continued for decades, which been extensively studied by photoelectron and electron–ion coincidence spectroscopies. For N 2 , if delocalized, K-shell excitation into π g orbital should split two components, i.e., dipole-allowed transition from ungerade σ u state dipole-forbidden gerade state. However, only observed up to now. Here, we report inner-shell electron energy loss spectra of at different scattering angles with an incident 1500 eV resolution 65 meV. vibrational structures ( 1 s σ u stretchy="false">) − π g }_{g})}^{-1}{(1{\pi states have identified momentum transfers. splitting between ${(1{\sigma reverse symmetry determined be 67 ± 7 Moreover, transfer dependence behavior intensity ratio agrees theoretical predictions, as increasing maximum then decreasing. experimental observations clearly show that inner most electrons can described indicates atoms based process.
